Our choir

The beginnings of our choir are intertwined with the life of Arthur McDonald who had been the organist at Woodseats and Dronfield. Arthur was a pillar of the church between the 1920’s and early 1980’s having been awarded the Benemerenti medal for his devotion to the music in both parishes.

An additional organist was Jacky Hargan who began playing in 1976 as a talented 12 year old and carried on until 1982 when she left to read music at Nottingham University.

Arthur McDonald’s death meant that Jack Lambert took over for the Sunday Mass and current organist and choirmaster, Brian Shipman, provided music for the Saturday Evening Vigil. At around this point the choir was formally put together to provide accompaniment for the new Mass settings that resulted from the Second Vatican Council.

Brian Shipman took over as both organist and choirmaster in 1996 when Jack Lambert passed away and has developed the music for the liturgy since then.

Performances have also been given outside the Mass with charity concerts, Millenium celebrations and a concert for St Wilfrid’s Drop-in Centre on their 10th anniversary.

The choir is always on the lookout for new talent so if you would like to join, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Brian via the parish contact details.
